Community Love at Sibonokuhle Primary School

Sibonokuhle Primary School is the local primary school on the Kamberg Road in Rosetta. Children attend from the Rosetta Village and all the surrounding rural areas. The school has wonderful buildings and a beautiful outlook, situated high up on a hill with country views for miles, but has very little resources available to it. A group of local servant-hearted ladies have taken it upon themselves to volunteer at the school once a week and to raise funds for some much needed resources and upgrades.

The ladies have volunteered at the school for approximately 2 years and have made a huge difference in upgrading the school, helping the head mistress and adding to the children’s progress in learning. The ladies volunteer at Sibonokuhle once a week for 2 hours at a time and they assist with English classes, reading to the children and some fun art classes. The government has given the school very little funding to go by and so the input from the community has made an incredible difference to the life of the school.

Through the donations of kind community members, Rotary, Rosetta Ratepayers Association, local businesses and Kamberg Farmer’s Association we have made some wonderful changes to the school environment. The interiors of all the classrooms have been painted in bright and cheery colours, a wonderful library has been created and a prefab was donated where a kitchen was built to help give the kids a nutritious lunch at the school. Rotary also got involved by getting overseas donors to raise money to supply the school with 20 new computers. We are now looking to find some new volunteers to teach some computer classes to the children. Two jungle gyms and some large tyre sandpits were also added to the outdoor area giving the kids some wonderful outdoor equipment to play on.

The Head Mistress of Sibonokuhle Primary School, Bongiwe, is an incredibly dedicated women who gives her all to the students and her school. Bongiwe even comes in over the holidays  and weekends to clean the school as well as making many sacrifices to see the school thrive. With the school having very little government funding, the only staff they have from Grades R – 7 are 2 teachers and the head mistress, so the need for outside funding and volunteering is a big necessity. Bongiwe is truly grateful to the community for all the help and the donations that have been raised.
