Fordoun’s Skye Bistro is a wonderful fine dining restaurant that oozes style and elegance as well as culinary artistry. The ambience is classy yet relaxing and the service is warm and efficient. They pride themselves on using the freshest local ingredients that the Midlands Meander has to offer and their chef has created a menu which offers some magnificent culinary creations that will delight any food lover like myself. They also have some firm favourites on the menu for the more conservative eaters among us.
Skye Bistro’s breakfast menu is full of delicious wake-me-up treats gushing with favourite South African ingredients as well as some local produce which is unique to the Midlands Meander area. They have a Midlands omelette which is packed full of smoked trout, fresh herbs and the local marinated Indezi Cheese. Sticking to the “local is lekker” food theme with their sweetcorn pap, boerie burger pattie and chakalaka breakfast and then something a little different with their Mediterranean sunrise breakfast which is a toasted pita filled with rustic hummus, avocado, aubergine pickle and so much more. Breakfast at Fordoun is definitely a food adventure that will set you up for the day’s events.Fordoun’s lunch menu is a little less adventurous offering the family favourites that will keep the kiddies happy. Lunch includes meals like toasted sarmies, artisanal pizzas, curry bunnies and steaks with delicious trimmings. We have always preferred going to Fordoun’s Skye Bistro in the evening, this is a classy affair with no children allowed after 6pm. It is a lovely venue for a romantic evening out or a special family celebration.Their dinner menu is really where the chef’s creative flair comes to the fore with some decadently unique food combinations. Starters like composed potato, mushroom-tomato confit, blue cheese and rocket salad or the grilled Patagonian calamari with rustic tomato broth . Main courses include delicious dishes like their signature beef fillet served with a deconstructed ratatouille, grilled duck breast with saffron fondant potatoes or the slow roasted pork belly with apricot and apple chutney. Fordoun’s dessert menu is also full of interesting sweet indulgences like their macerated berries with spiced mascarpone and balsamic reduction or their mango and avocado cheesecake. Complete the perfect meal with their classic local cheese platter. The menu is relatively small but still gives you more than enough choice, with all the unique meals to choose from you are faced with a rather tough decision. For a stunning meal out which offers style and class with dishes that are sure to excite the taste buds or a weekend away full of luxury interiors, food adventures and spa indulgences then book in at Fordoun Hotel and Spa. A hidden treasure in the heart of the Midlands Meander.
