24 Apr Mist in the Midlands
CHANGING SEASONS
South Africa doesn’t really have massive season changes, except in the mountains. During our stay in the Midlands over Easter the seasons definitely changed from Summer to deep Autumn in just a few days. As the season changes the mist rolls in each day to give the place an eerie look.
A chill in the air
Most days you wake up to misty landscapes and later on in the morning the sun burns through the mist, clearing and turning cold mornings into glorious sunny days. The days get shorter and there is a definite chill in the air, and then the time comes to dust out the fireplace when the cold snaps roll in.
So many great looking cows in the Midlands
If you’re in to cows and beautiful country landscapes then the Midlands Meander is for you. Many people coming to the area for the first time compare the beauty of the area to the English Countryside, especially on those misty, rainy days. There are green rolling hills for miles and the added beauty of the majestic Drakensberg Mountain views.
When the mist clears
And the cold front with it’s rainy days pass you have crisp, clear mornings, the sun shining through the changing autumn trees. The blue skies stretch out for miles and there are incredibly clear views of the Drakensberg Mountains from Giant’s View Estate, views that seem to go on for days. These days are not too hot and not too cold, a perfect time of year for outdoor picnics, hikes in the mountains or a day of fishing.
SUNSETS
The sunsets views from our plots are a sight to behold. The view of the sun setting over the mountains are framed by two perfectly positioned poplar trees from the main house lawn. Days after days there are amazing views to accompany an afternoon braai. The perfect spot for sundowner drinks without leaving the comfort of your porch. These landscapes are a photographers dream, making it easy to get beautiful shots.
FUN WITH THE FAMILY
The country lifestyle is any child’s dream, sticking on the gumboots, jumping and splashing in muddy puddles can keep the kiddies busy for hours. The bottom part of the property is a wetland area with a pathway that leads in and around the wetland and the beautiful Mooi River. This is a great place to go for an afternoon walk, to go exploring and catch some insects and frogs. This is food the soul, a simpler way of life, away from the technology saturated world of the cities.
