Terbodore Coffee Roasters: artisan coffee at its best

Terbodore is an absolute gem of a restaurant tucked away on the Curry’s Post road near Howick. This is a must stop on the Midlands Meander, not only for their fantastic coffee, but exceptional food, beautiful gardens and of course their Great Danes. After taking a lazy drive through the countryside and entering their parking lot you quickly notice how popular this spot is. They are not only famous for their superb coffee roastery but for their imaginative menu and great country atmosphere.

Great Danes lie lazily at the entrance, creating a relaxed country feel as soon as you arrive. We loved their stylishly rustic farmhouse decor which gives the restaurant a homely atmosphere. Our first visit to Terbodore coffee was on a freezing cold midlands day with rain pelting down from every angle, but as soon as we entered the restaurant area we were warmly welcomed to our table comforted by smiley faces and roaring fires inside. The restaurant is busy but not a sprawling mass of tables so there is a more intimate and enjoyable atmosphere created.

To say that Terbodore take their coffee seriously is a serious understatement. They take their coffee making to another level and you can taste the care and passion that goes into each cup as their coffee is a cut above any other in the area. Started as a coffee roastery in 2004 they have been roasting coffee beans on site for over 12 years and now stocking their beans in many shops across South Africa. They even have a branch in the stunning hamlet of Franschoek. Terbodore have over 9 coffee variants with imported arabica coffee beans from 13 different countries which are roasted, blended and flavoured on site to create the full bodied range of coffees. They have a professional barista on site 24/7 and chatting to him is an absolute coffee education, passion oozing out in his every explanation. Terbodore have all the awards to back up their roastery so gushing over their coffee is not without merit.

Sitting in the garden for a lazy lunch and getting that great aroma of French vanilla is quite an unforgettable experience. Their menu is local and lekker but forward thinking at the same time. Dishes include a spicy curry bunny, duck and phyllo stack, mega beef burger, moroccan lamb and prune tagine, homemade pies and loads more. The menu is quite small but has a lot of different things to offer for various tastes. Terbodore’s hearty meals are wonderful on those wintery days and the boys cannot seem to resist their homemade pies and tasty fillet. The food is served with style and you can taste the freshness. They also have a daily offering of fresh cakes including a walnut and cinnamon cheesecake and deep fried milk tart.

At most restaurants you will end the meal with a lovely cappuccino but at Terbodore you start your meal at the espresso bar for a coffee education, you smell the wafts of the fresh roastery throughout your meal, you end off your meal with a unforgettable cappuccino and leave with a few bags of their coffee beans. A coffee lovers dream come true.
