Tumble Downs – the perfect country lunch

Tumbledowns Restaurant (4)

One may ask what makes for the perfect country lunch?…. Some may say a beautiful setting is a must, others may say warm country hospitality is important while the men might insist its all about the grub. Tumble Downs is one of my perfect country lunch spots as it ticks all these boxes and more.  Tumble Downs is a wonderful cafe and restaurant situated on the Curry’s Post near Howick. They have an idyllic setting with beautiful panoramic views, delicious cuisine, friendly service and a wonderful area to keep the little ones entertained. This is the perfect spot for family lunch out on the Midlands Meander.

Tumble Downs is run and owned by an amazing husband and wife team, Werner and Michele Jacobs, they opened their doors in 2006 and have been serving the lovely people of Howick delicious meals for 11 years now. Michele is the busy chef in the kitchen creating wonderful taste combinations while Werner takes care of guests with his warm, Afrikaans hospitality. Their service is great and they are always willing to explain the details on the menu and help with any dietary requirements.

Tumble Downs has always been our favourite family lunch spot to go to on those gorgeous sunny days. They have rolling gardens with views that stretch out for days, making it very conducive to finishing off a couple bottles of wine, especially since the kids are well entertained with their outdoor jungle gyms and their friendly pigs. They have a very relaxed atmosphere making sure you settle in for a whole day’s feasting.

Their menu is full of delicious meals taking your taste buds on a flavoursome journey. Starters include dishes like grilled camembert with brandy figs, prawn and pepperdew skewers on an asian slaw or shredded duck spring rolls. Main meals include dishes like their sweet and sour lamb in a phyllo basket, morrocan chickpea and butternut curry, beef fillet stacked with bacon and three cheese sauce, duck breast with orange sherry syrup and loads more. End the meal off with their decadent desserts like the hot chocolate fondant or my personal favourite, the ever-so-creamy amarula panna cotta.
